Dr. Paolone studied at Sapienza, University of Rome (PhD in Pharmacology). She did post-doctoral studies at the Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology (Montreal, Canada) and the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, MI, USA). Her early research work was concerned with behavioral and neurobiological changes in the brain brought about by exposure to psychostimulant and opioid drugs. She then focused on attentional processes cholinergic-mediated in animal models of altered circadian rhythmicity, addiction and neurodegenerative diseases.
In 2015, thank to a Marie Curie IAPP fellowships, she moved to Gloriana Therapeutic, Inc. (former NsGene, Providence, RI, USA) to investigate the effects of encapsulated cells, engineered to release Glial cell line-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (GDNF), implanted into di hippocampus in a rat model of epilepsy.
Her current research interest concerns 1) to investigate the behavioral and neurobiological outcomes related to the interaction between the dopaminergic and cholinergic systems in animal models of psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases or as a consequence of prolonged exposure to addictive drugs; 2) explore the therapeutic and functional effects of neurotrophic proteins released, through an innovative, clinically-validated, implantable cell system, directly to diseased nerve cells.

Neruopsychopharmacology The research objective is a better knowledge of the phenomena and processes of adaptation to drugs, scheduled drugs, doping, palatable foods and to all those substances that trigger and maintain neuropsychiatric disorders and risky behaviours. From the mechanistic point of view, it is the study of the brain activation and plasticity when exposed to the interaction between substances and environment.
