Dr. Paolone received her PhD in Pharmacology from Sapienza, University of Rome followed by post-doctoral studies at the Center for Studies in Behavioral Neurobiology in Montreal and the University of Michigan. Her early work elucidated (1) the behavioral and neurobiological changes in the brain following psychostimulant and opioid drugs and (2) cholinergic-mediated attentional processes in models of circadian rhythmicity, addiction and neurodegeneration.  
In 2015, she was the recipient of a Marie Curie IAPP fellowship which supported her investigations into the anti-epileptic effects of GDNF-secreting cells implanted into the rat temporal lobe. 
These efforts ultimately led to her recognition as "Citizen of the year 2019" by the Mayor of Verona. 

Her current research interest concerns are two-fold with investigations into the interaction between dopaminergic and cholinergic systems in animal models of psychiatric/neurodegenerative diseases or prolonged exposure to addictive drugs and explorations into the therapeutic and functional effects of neurotrophic proteins delivered directly to diseased nerve cells from implantable biopolymers.

Neruopsychopharmacology The research objective is a better knowledge of the phenomena and processes of adaptation to drugs, scheduled drugs, doping, palatable foods and to all those substances that trigger and maintain neuropsychiatric disorders and risky behaviours. From the mechanistic point of view, it is the study of the brain activation and plasticity when exposed to the interaction between substances and environment.
